As Charles Caleb Colton said back in the days of the Commodore 64: “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”. But what must be remembered is that without imitation we wouldn’t have innovation. Dwarf Fortress laid the groundwork by innovating on games like King of Dragon Pass. Now, while the text based clan manager is near unrecognisable to our modern town-builders, it’s influence is still felt.
If you're not tired of Rimworld just yet, we have a guide to the best mods you should check out.
While the free version of Dwarf Fortress is great, it’s arcane UI and losing-is-fun design does turn off a lot of would be players. So the design was innovated and along came Rimworld. But now Rimworld has been around for five years and it’s time to see what new innovations have come along since.
Dwarf Fortress Steam
Developer: Bay 12 Games
Available:At some point via Steam
Available:At some point via Steam
The only thing better than a game like Dwarf Fortress.. is Dwarf Fortress itself! This is a bit of a cheeky entry but it's worth bearing in mind that the upcoming Steam release of Dwarf Fortress isn't the exact same game that legend speaks of. Developers Bay 12 are formalising the habits of some players by giving it an official skin pack which will give it graphics comparable to any of the modern successors below. The developers are also looking at adding additional premium features themed around creating a version of Dwarf Fortress for a more mainstream audience, although it pretty much plays the same and will be updated inline with the the free/classic version.
Dwarf Fortress on Steam will include the original game, in all it's retro glory, as well as skinned-up modes such as Fortress Mode & Adventure Mode. It will also come with official Steam Workshop integration. Sadly, there's no timeline as to when this will release, so we'll have to just sit tight in the interim. Maybe play some of the games below.
First Feudal
Developer: Holistic Games
Available: Steam (Early Access)
Available: Steam (Early Access)
First Feudal (thanks to Steam’s algorithms) is the first game that Steam recommends on the Rimworld store page. Granted, it does have some similar elements. You collect resources, craft workbenches, and build workshops and homes by placing walls, doors, and floors. You even control villagers, giving them tasks and tools and satisfying their needs for food and sleep.
First Feudal doesn’t just copy the format though. Instead it is more like a town building RPG where you control a character and must build up the town by leading the villagers as opposed to Rimworld’s omniscient overseer. The concept is good, putting you in the thick of it with the villagers theoretically adds more investment into the colony. However, at this point in early access the AI is clunky and slow. If they lack a tool they will stand around doing nothing which, while giving a more realistic view on group work, leaves the experience feeling flat. Tack this on to the wave survival and First Feudal ends up feeling more like a tower defence with extra steps.
If you are a fan of Factorio but want a medieval experience then First Feudal might be a good call. Actually, come to think of it that would be an interesting game..
King Under The Mountain
Developer: Rocket Jump Technology
Available: N/A - Pre-order
Available: N/A - Pre-order
This one is a bit of a wildcard as it's not actually available yet. It had a successful Kickstarter that concluded in the middle of August, but otherwise is not available for general release yet, although you can still pre-order it via Backerkit. King Under The Mountain is to Rimworld what Neanderthals were to us and both can trace their lineage straight back to Dwarf Fortress.
The Kickstarter promises an experience that for all intents and purposes is identical to Rimworld except with a high fantasy wrapping and a few unique selling points. First up, you’re dwarves! Yay! Except you don’t always have to be. The Kickstarter promises the ability to play as humans and orcs, both of which have their own unique requirements and playstyles.
As it currently stands King Under The Mountain feels closer to Prison Architect with the furniture available to rooms being decided by what 'zone' they are rather than the other way around. That isn’t a bad thing though as it means the UI is kept simple and straightforward.
Their Kickstarter page also links to a prototype so you can try it out for yourself - as of the September development update, the dev team are currently working on adding ins a save/load feature. We have our fingers crossed King Under The Mountain turns out as good as its role models.
Civitatem
Publisher: LW Games
Available: Steam (Early Access)
Available: Steam (Early Access)
Civitatem is similar to First Feudal in that you get an avatar that is physically present in the world but doesn’t depart much from the Rimworld ancestry and keeps you in your omniscient position. It’s also similar to Rimworld in that the art style is nearly identical but that’s about as far as the comparisons go. Civitatem is more like sadistic town-builder Banished albeit with a tighter focus. Much like it’s inspiration seasons play a large role in the survival of the colony with animals migrating away during winter and crops needing to be planted in spring to come up in time.
While Civitatem may get some flak for having a generic appearance it seems to have some original ideas under the hood with promises of an “exploration mini-game” to discover other settlements. However, it’s too early in development to tell what Civitatem is going to become when it’s finished. If you were a fan of Banished and Rimworld then keep an eye on this one as the developer seems to be putting a lot of effort in.
Judgement: Apocalypse Survival Simulation
Developer: Suncrash
Available: Steam
Available: Steam
Ignoring the biblically long title, Judgement is a neat little colony management game set during the apocalypse. The name really tells you everything you need to know about the concept. You start with 3 campers who were lucky enough to be out in the woods when Hell erupted and have to build a settlement while waiting for the whole mess to resolve itself. I can really appreciate that kind of mentality.
To keep with the theme, you have a 'visibility' meter that you need to take care of. Researching stealth tactics, camouflaging, and certain rituals allows you to stay under the radar and creates a nice natural progression. Grow too fast and you risk catching the attention of the demonic forces. Grow too slow and you run the risk of not being able to defend yourself.
Colonists are relatively smart, taking care of jobs that seem the most important, though this means one colonist will become obsessed with the well and another with the research table. Ruins around the forest can be scavenged for random supplies and there are other locations on the world map that can be scavenged.
The biggest departure from its ancestry is the inclusion of real-time tactical combat. When combat starts, the game switches from base building to putting you in full control of the colonists. Trees and structures provide cover which your ranged units can use à laX:Com. Each colonist has a selection of special abilities based on their equipment, traits, and skills and while it isn’t as in-depth as its predecessor, it’s still fun.
If you’re looking for a Rimworld experience from a base building and horrible raids point of view, then Judgement doesn’t disappoint.
Oxygen Not Included
Developer: Klei Entertainment
Available: Steam (Early Access)
Available: Steam (Early Access)
Probably the biggest name on this list, and one that most Rimworld fan have heard before, but for those who haven’t heard; Oxygen Not Included is one of the best alternatives.
Swapping the top-down for side on, Oxygen Not Included puts you in charge of a clone filled asteroid base and ramps the difficulty up to 11. Not content with just managing colonist’s mental states and physical health, you are also in charge of dealing with the temperature, water quality, and pollution. Put the bathrooms next to the reservoir? Yeah, everyone’s going to get sick.
Originally I felt that Oxygen Not Included was too difficult and had little in the way of content but Klei have continued to update it at a frantic pace and have expanded and improved pretty much every month.
Rimworld Mods 16
The biggest challenge is managing the rising or falling temperatures, moving gasses, and dealing with build ups of polluted liquids from the small bladdered colonist. Everything about it is bursting with character from the build up of tears from sad replicants to the way they curl up like cats in their beds.
If you like Rimworld and need a change of pace, Oxygen Not Included is a perfect alternative.
Starship Theory
Developer: Reconnect Software
Available:Steam (Early Access)
Available:Steam (Early Access)
Warning: Based on recent Steam reviews and communications by the Developer, progress on Starship Theory does not seem to be going well. At the time of writing there hadn't been an updated since 2018 and while the dev has stated they want to try and finish the remaining features, we're not confident this will be much better than what it is currently. Buyer beware!
Original Text: This one actually managed to slip by unseen and yet has a very interesting concept that is mostly untouched. In Starship Theory you actually build your spaceship as you move through the galaxy. The closest I know of a game like this is SpaceBase DF9, although the less said about that the better…
While the UI can be a bit daunting at first as it presents 8 boxes on the screen with more hidden away in sub tabs, it is at least surmountable. Once you’ve got the basics down, Starship Theory has a lot to offer. Described by some as FTL meets Rimworld, you will explore the galaxy actively mining with mining lasers, collecting resources, and building your craft. Crew can be tasked to operate various consoles which control different systems on the ship. Navigation allows for better jumps, science consoles allow for researching, communications allow for trading with other ships, etc.
Aug 18, 2015 - There Is No Preview Available For This Item. This item does not appear to have any files that can be experienced on Archive.org. Cricket coach 2014 crack.
The combat is very reminiscent of FTL with a little more free-aim and with the added worry that warping away while a crew member is outside of the ship means they are left behind. Starship Theory is still being updated regularly and looks to be shaping up into a fine alternative.
Pro-tip: Get both, play through your Rimworld file and build a small ship. Launch 4 colonists then boot up Starship Theory and remake your colonists to continue your adventure.
Do you have a favourite Rimworld alternative? Let us know in the comments!

05 Jun 20198Planning ahead for Valentine's day? What could be more romantic than a co-op session with your significant other in RimWorld - something that is now possible thanks to an enterprising modder.
First launched back in December, the mod by Zetrith allows for co-operative play in a RimWorld game, with basically as many players as you want (almost). Although still in the testing stages, it's now several versions in: and starting to receive attention on Reddit for its impressive stability and accessibility.
In terms of features, the mod boasts hot joining, hosting from existing saves, chat, and the ability to connect with Steam friends. It's an incredibly smooth and professional experience, although as the mod isn't in the Steam Workshop, so you'll need to do the installation process yourself (it's quite simple).
To test out the mod, I enlisted the services of Eurogamer's seemingly-only-other RimWorld fan, Matt Wales. After a slightly bumpy start in which someone downloaded the wrong file (make sure you choose the latest version, currently 0.4.4 Multiplayer.zip), we soon figured out how to get the mod up and running.
You'll need to unpack Multiplayer.zip (once unzipped) to RimWorld's 'mods' folder, which you can find through Steam by going to a game's properties then location files. Once you've done this, simply load RimWorld, click on the mods tab in the menu, and enable the multiplayer mod (don't touch 'core' or things will start breaking).
The next stage is to simply reboot RimWorld, then either host a game yourself (either from the multiplayer tab or by starting a single player game and then clicking 'host') or join an existing one by visiting the new multiplayer tab on RimWorld's main menu. We used the Steam friends method, which conveniently displays when your buddies are playing. You can also play LAN games, or connect directly with your IP address.
:: GTA 5 cheats: PS4, Xbox, PC cheats list and how to enter all cheats, phone codes and console commands
If you're struggling to get this installed, check out the full instructions for RimWorld mods here, or consult the mod's wiki.
Having completed the installation process, we entered our co-op game and were seriously impressed with the smoothness of the mod. We didn't experience any problems with desyncs, although we were only playing for a short while. Even those who used it for longer periods reported a very small number of desyncs, and it's easy to rejoin should you encounter problems.
Something worth noting is all players are able to control all aspects of the colony, which can result in some particularly cosy co-operative work. This separates it from other multiplayer RimWorld mods, such as Phi Mod, which allows players to interact between colonies while retaining control over their own settlements. Personally I quite enjoy the fully co-operative play - but if you have a friend with a tendency for trolling, watch out.
Given my last RimWorld session ended in a burnt-down colony when I let the wrong person perform surgery, this mod seems ripe for some ridiculous situations. If you do play this with your partner, I hope they won't ask for space afterwards.
Ludeon Studios as been working very hard on Rimworld for some time now. The game has actually stayed with early access for years now, and so, you may think to yourself that this game has a terrible future. On the contrary, Rimworld is alive and well and has a bright future. That’s partially thanks to the community around it, with plenty of modders and add-ons that will keep this game alive and well for a long time. But eventually you may grow tired of Rimworld and decide that you desire something new.
Are there games like Rimworld out there? Plenty. Follow along below, as we have put together a list of games that may interest you if you liked Rimworld. So without further ado, here they are:
Judgment: Apocalypse Survival
Despite the daunting name, Judgment is a rather unique and enjoyable title, putting the player into the middle of the apocalypse. You discover several survivors, and you work out a plan to build a fort away from the madness, in an attempt to escape the demons. You must continue a research towards keeping you, and your people, safe and hidden from the demons; however, beware of your own prosperity in this world — if you should become so large that you should not be able to stay hidden, you will quickly be found and punished by the demons.

Dwarf Fortress
The complexity of this title is extreme; however, if understood, this game can be one that you will look on fondly for some time. Manage the life of your people carefully and you may just find that Dwarf Fortress is a lot more than just a complicated game. With all the guides and advice you can find on the internet, you should not have a problem.
Dwarf Fortress allows you to construct and build Dwarf fortresses, for which your dwarven people will survive, and prosper. Much like rimworld, and several other titles in this list, you should be clever about how you manage and use your resources. Build into the depths of the earth, crafting and constructing a massive citadel that will overshadow any other fortress.

Oxygen Not Included
Oxygen Not Included is actually extremely similar to Rimworld. Oxygen Not included comes in from a different perspective; however, the premise is essentially the same. Like Rimworld, Oxygen Not Included puts the player in full control of their colony. Trapped on a foreign world, you must ensure that your colony survives and prospers. Ensure that you use logic when building your base, as there are many variables to take into account, and disease is just one of them. The difficulty of this game may be off putting, but the design and thought that went into this wonderful game is something that can easily be appreciated. Oxygen Not Included provides you with the wonderful opportunity to enjoy to manage a new colony to an all too great degree.

Starship Theory
With a unique concept and enjoyable mechanics, you may find that Starship Theory brings a very entertaining turn to the sci-fi genre. Traveling through the overwhelmingly vast darkness of space, you must continue to survive and escape the terrors of the universe. You’ll also have to constantly build and upgrade your ship to take on new threats. As you travel, be sure to collect resources through the mining of asteroids via a mining laser. With a UI that offers a large amount of options, you may begin with a bit of confusion, but as you continue through the game you should quickly grasp and understand Starship Theory.

Civitatem
In Civitatem, you village has been raided, and anything of use has been put to the torch. With no other hope for survival, and no hope of returning, you and the survivors travel far east, intent on rebuilding your lost home. Civitatem brings a medieval style city building sim that allows you to design and create your own city for which to survive. Manage resources and ensure that you and your people stock enough food to last the winter, for grain will not grow in the winter, neither will you find many animals wandering about in the cold. Being put into an omniscient position similar to Rimworld, you do get a physical avatar unlike Rimworld. While still being developed, Civitatem does look promising.

The game RimWorld is remarkable not at all for the elements of craft, but psychological nuances, because each colonist is a unique person who may have internal problems. For example, one of the survivors is nothing to just fly off the coils and in a fit of an attack, set fire to the barn with food. The rest of the group, of course, will rush to eliminate the fire, but they risk getting multiple burns of varying degrees, which will later have to be treated. And, most interestingly, you will never be able to find out what this or that colonist has in mind.RimWorld is a story generator. It’s designed to co-author tragic, twisted, and triumphant stories about imprisoned pirates, desperate colonists, starvation and survival. It works by controlling the «random» events that the world throws at you. Every thunderstorm, pirate raid, and traveling salesman is a card dealt into your story by the AI Storyteller. There are several storytellers to choose from. Randy Random does crazy stuff, Cassandra Classic goes for rising tension, and Phoebe Chillax likes to relax.
Your colonists are not professional settlers — they’re crash-landed survivors from a passenger liner destroyed in orbit. You can end up with a nobleman, an accountant, and a housewife. You’ll acquire more colonists by capturing them in combat and turning them to your side, buying them from slave traders, or taking in refugees. So your colony will always be a motley crew.
Each person’s background is tracked and affects how they play. A nobleman will be great at social skills (recruiting prisoners, negotiating trade prices), but refuse to do physical work. A farm oaf knows how to grow food by long experience, but cannot do research. A nerdy scientist is great at research, but cannot do social tasks at all. A genetically engineered assassin can do nothing but kill — but he does that very well.
Colonists develop — and destroy — relationships. Each has an opinion of the others, which determines whether they’ll become lovers, marry, cheat, or fight. Perhaps your two best colonists are happily married — until one of them falls for the dashing surgeon who saved her from a gunshot wound.
The game generates a whole planet from pole to equator. You choose whether to land your crash pods in a cold northern tundra, a parched desert plain, a temperate forest, or a steaming equatorial jungle. Different areas have different animals, plants, diseases, temperatures, rainfall, mineral resources, and terrain. These challenges of surviving in a disease-infested, choking jungle are very different from those in a parched desert wasteland or a frozen tundra with a two-month growing season.
You can tame and train animals. Lovable pets will cheer up sad colonists. Farm animals can be worked, milked, and sheared. Attack beasts can be released upon your enemies. There are many animals — cats, labrador retrievers, grizzly bears, camels, cougars, chinchillas, chickens, and exotic alien-like lifeforms.
People in RimWorld constantly observe their situation and surroundings in order to decide how to feel at any given moment. They respond to hunger and fatigue, witnessing death, disrespectfully unburied corpses, being wounded, being left in darkness, getting packed into cramped environments, sleeping outside or in the same room as others, and many other situations. If they’re too stressed, they might lash out or break down.
Wounds, infections, prosthetics, and chronic conditions are tracked on each body part and affect characters' capacities. Eye injuries make it hard to shoot or do surgery. Wounded legs slow people down. Hands, brain, mouth, heart, liver, kidneys, stomach, feet, fingers, toes, and more can all be wounded, diseased, or missing, and all have logical in-game effects. And other species have their own body layouts — take off a deer’s leg, and it can still hobble on the other three. Take off a rhino’s horn, and it’s much less dangerous.
You can repair body parts with prosthetics ranging from primitive to transcendent. A peg leg will get Joe Colonist walking after an unfortunate incident with a rhinoceros, but he’ll still be quite slow. Buy an expensive bionic leg from a trader the next year, and Joe becomes a superhuman runner. You can even extract, sell, buy, and transplant internal organs.

How does that old saying go – by failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail? Or, in RimWorld’s [official site] case, by failing to prepare, you’re preparing to fail; and even if you prepare really, really well, you’re probably best preparing for failure all the same.
You see, even with the most meticulous preparation and planning, success is far from guaranteed in Ludeon Studios’ survival management sim. RimWorld is a game that sees even the most seasoned colonists come a cropper at the drop of a hat – not to mention established popstars who’ve otherwise enjoyed privileged upbringings – which is why it’s good to know intuitive user-made mods are there to help us through its often harsh expectations.
Edb Prepare Carefully
By edbmod
Edb Prepare Carefully is a nifty mod to kick things off. Instead of having you simply pick a starting location and go for it from the game’s outset, this handy leg-up lets you customise your prospective colonists – choosing their gear, backstory, stats, traits, appearance, and essentially everything else that’s worth tweaking at will. An optional points limiter affords the more adventurous players a more balanced start, however this mod caters to those who’re after limitations and strict boundaries.
Now, you and I both know there’s scant guarantee on how your mob will behave once out in the wild, but Edb Prepare Carefully lets you play God and build your starting group within rigid parameters so you’re afforded the best chance of surviving out in the wilderness. For a while, at least. Fail to prepare and all that…
Colony Manager, Relations Tab, Medical Tab, and Work Tab
By Fluffy
Through all of that preparing to fail, Fluffy is a modder who understands your pain. He’s crafted over a dozen modifications which should help in varying degrees, but there’re some in particular which should aid your quest toward becoming queen/king coloniser.
Colony Manager is perhaps the most helpful of the lot. It ostensibly removes the majority of tedious micromanagement from your duties, and prompts your workers to get their proverbial fingers out. You’ll manually set up production lines that’ll transform raw materials to finished products autonomously, and you’ll set bills via a new ‘Manager’ tab which will assign manager skill-boasting colonists to in turn assign jobs to the rest. “In theory there is no real limit to the number of global bills that can be set,” reads the mod’s description while asserting that “you’re still the overlord.”
Furthering this idea of streamlining otherwise overly-complicated menus (something RimWorld is often guilty of), Fluffy’s Medical Tab, Relations Tab and Work Tab mods all simplify their respective criteria by way of handy graphs, indicators, and complete tab overhauls.
NB – Fluffy’s Steam Workshop page is probably worth checking out in its entirety.
Glitter Tech and Efficient Light
By Sam and Rimfire respectively
Between all the tinkering and tweaking, managing and milling, you really should take some time to treat yourself. Building upon the preexisting in-game mentions of futuristic “glitter worlds”, Glitter Tech is more superficial-leaning than most other RimWorld mods but grants you access to an arsenal of advanced power generators, bionic limbs and organs, high tech energy weapons and armour, powerful turrets and automatic mortars, and wall lights and blast doors.
Be warned, though, crafting such exceptional wares is likely to attract the attention of unscrupulous corporations, says mod creator Sam. These groups of shady characters aren’t likely to turn up until the late game, but will nevertheless come packing quite the punch when they do. Sam recommends you start a new world with this ‘un in order to experience the “full Glitter Tech experience.”
With all of that surplus power, you might also want to consider a more energy efficient lifestyle while lost in the cosmos. Rimfire’s Efficient Light is a bright idea, ahem, that handles that by reducing the power usage of the standing lamp from 75 to 25. In a flash, ahem, you’ll help better maintain vital systems in the face of cursory ambience.
Orion’s Hospitality and Orion’s Faction Discovery
![Rimworld mods downloads Rimworld mods downloads](/uploads/1/2/3/7/123700385/565327986.jpg)
By [R5L] Orion
As I’m sure you’re now well aware, being lost in space can be a pretty lonely experience – particularly when your roommates have gone berserk, are gravely ill, and/or have died. Wouldn’t it be nice, then, if those non-hostile visitor types stayed for longer than that single one-off trade? What if you could provide them with guest beds and rooms? What if they even joined your faction for keeps? Modder Orion understands such desires and as such has crafted three mods to address this very point.
Orion’s Hospitality is the main one which caters to the above and establishes your colony as a regular traveller hub. If the nomads gain your trust, there’s a good chance they’ll stick around – so long as you’ve got the means to keep them from going berserk, getting gravely ill and/or dying, naturally. Orion’s Faction Discovery allows you to create new factions that can be loaded straight from existing games, as opposed to forcing you to start again in order to see them in action. Ultimately, this mod ensures you always have enough recommended bases on the map to activate “every faction you have installed.” Furthermore, a bonus Hippie Faction introduces “good old forest dwellers who don’t mean anyone harm” that are “ready to be exploited.”
More Vanilla Turrets and Combat Realism
![Reddit Reddit](/uploads/1/2/3/7/123700385/864718220.jpg)
By Jaxxa and skyarkhangel respectively
These mods are actually at odds with one in another in that they don’t appear to be compatible, however each adds a degree of realism to the game – as far as crash landing a spacecraft onto a foreign planet and setting up shop years into the future feasibly allows.
First, More Vanilla Turrets does exactly what you might expect by adding more turrets that are in-keeping with the base game’s style and design. Expect more turret and mortar variations (and a shallow moat), alongside some refined balancing. The full list of particulars can be found in this direction, however this mod also requires you up your research game in order to realise its full potential. Specifically, you’ll want to look into gun turret cooling; military grade turrets; shredder and precision turrets; vulcan cannons; mortars; and devastator mortars.
Again, Combat Realism sadly doesn’t play nice with the above, however it does straighten out RimWorld’s bendy-physics firearm shootyness which I personally find a touch frustrating. Instead, this mod facilitates some pretty extensive changes to combat and weapons by way of rebalancing, shooting ranges in relation to line-of-sight, fire rates, cooldown time periods and a whole host of other considerations which are designed to mirror real life.
Also see: Abrexus’ SuperiorCraftingA11b – an at times overly complicated mod which nonetheless adds a nice layer of realism, by way of logical thinking, and challenge to RimWorld’s research tree.
The Exiled Tribe and The Hangover From Hell
By Blitz and EnterElysium respectively
And so onto the scenarios because, let’s face it, that’s what RimWorld is all about. If you’ve reached this far in the list, I know that you know the longevity of your life out in the intergalactic wilderness is often a roll of the dice and that’s what makes it so darned great. Stick your ‘fail to prepare’ axiom!
Anyway, the first scenario worth turning you head towards (and then most likely sharply away from) is Blitz’s The Exiled Tribe. Things kick off when your tribe decides to swipe the current chief’s magical shield and ceremonial dagger, which in turn prompts a witch hunt with you and your pals as the star prize. Your entourage quickly realises this so-called “magic shield” is pretty damn useless, thus you “decide to pack up the village’s elephant and flee in the middle of the night.” Good luck!
EnterElysium’s The Hangover From Hell, on the other hand, stars five chums who awake with killer hangovers/an 80 percent chance to start with the ‘Chemical Interest’ trait (and a 100 percent chance of being hungover, duh) and must evacuate a burning ship. The writing’s on the wall with this one, really, as you’re tasked with making your way to the lifeboats – “with all the booze you can carry of course” – before making a break to an unknown land. I’d say good luck here too, but I reckon you’re doomed from the outset to be brutally honest.
Medieval Times and Zombie Apocalypse
By Vindar and Justin C
Hear ye! hear ye! Vindar’s Medieval Times mod is essentially an expansion to RimWorld which introduces two new medieval factions, and appropriate clothing, weapons, armour and building items. Beyond three new settlements, new maps also include two medieval societies and one medieval warband – the former of which act like outlander towns, the latter of which functions in similar nature to raiders. If part of the base game is about observing power struggles within initially unassuming colonies, adding a dash of the Middle Ages into the mix brings brutality to the table from the off.
And if you think power-hungry monarchs pose a challenge, try combating brain-hungry undead in Justin C’s Zombie Apocalypse. As “mindless killers”, zombies don’t just pose a threat physically – singularly and/or in hordes – but also promise widespread infection if you wind up the wrong end of their bite. Worse still, they can even endanger colonies via airborne viruses. “This incident never ends,” says the mod’s blurb of the latter. “Once the virus goes airborne, everyone is infected.” Lovely.

Orion’s Big Family

I think it’s probably best to let the mod’s creator field this one:
“Have you been waiting years and years for your brother-in-law to show up and he just walks past, just to be never seen again? Plot twist! One Big Family solves this problem by changing the odds! Everyone is related… somehow, right!? That spacer you found in a 2000 year old casket? Plot twist! Turns out to be the son you never knew of!
“Just settled down, built a little house with your wife and kids? Plot twist! Your step-mother comes on a visit with your secret lover who is also your wife’s daughter to sell you dog meat! Getting raided by a horde of savages? Plot twist! They brought their whole family tree, including your evil sister who turns out to be their leader and grandmother!
“After all, we’re now One Big Family!”
And that marks the end of our best RimWorld mods. Surviving the harsh realities of the space jungle while herding a temperamental group of colonists requires a very select skillset, though – one which is indefinitely subject to constant change.
